Dave Cunningham was a much-loved NCSA Flight Instructor with a passion for flying. He particularly enjoyed introducing young people to the joy and skills of soaring flight. NCSA has established this youth soaring scholarship in his honor.

Rules regulating the Dave Cunningham Youth Scholarship (12/4/2010 ):
1. For a full time High School, or college student, or post high school accredited vocational program, less than 23 years old who otherwise couldn't afford to pay to obtain a private glider rating. Financial need will be based on honor system.

3. NCSA will make the scholarship known on our website, Buzzard, Pasco Newsletter, but not otherwise solicit applicants.
4. A student applicant must be passing her/his classes with at least 2.5 average. The scholarship may be revoked if the student’s school grades falls below 2.5 GPA.
5. Participant shall make steady progress toward obtaining private pilot glider rating including passing the written test in a timely manner. The student's progress, motivation, regular attendance, etc. will be evaluated on a regular basis, at the beginning of every quarter, by his/her instructors.
6. Evaluation of applicants and recommendation of award of the scholarship to the NCSA Board shall be made by a committee of NCSA members and instructors plus the President as ex‑officio member. Scholarship will be awarded by a majority vote (email vote ok ) of NCSA Board of Directors.
7. Applicant shall:
A. Live within driving distance to Byron. Transportation arrangements will need to be spelled out if applicant does not have a driving license (under age)
B. Provide two personal references from adults not related to the applicant.
C. Write a one page or less essay on her/his interest in aviation and gliding.
D. Complete NCSA Application Form as well as NCSA Cunningham Application Form
E. Provide current academic report card (if applicable)
F. Obtain written consent of his/her parents, if under age 18.
8. Any unused funds shall be returned to the Scholarship fund.
9. There will be no deadline for application and award shall be made when the fund has sufficient assets.
10. Scholarship rules can be changed, altered, or amended by a majority of the NCSA Board of Directors.
